Appreciate Local Volunteers Tomorrow

Mayor William F. Martin has joined with the U.S. Conference of Mayors in supporting the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 9, 2013. This important day serves to highlight the vital community contributions made on the national and state levels by AmeriCorps and their many subsidiaries such as VISTA, SeniorCorps/RSVP, YouthServe and MassLIFT.

HRC Begins Pre-K Initiative

From a Greenfield Human Rights Commission (HRC) press release:

On Monday, April 8, 2013, at 6:00 PM in the Greenfield Town Hall meeting room, the Greenfield Human Rights Commission will initiate an Early Childhood Education Initiative based upon President Obama's proposed universal Pre-K program. This entails, among other parts, Universal Pre-School, increased support and eligibility for Head Start, Early Learning Challenge Grants and Child Care Development Block Grant programming. The Commission will begin a process of educating the community about the pending legislation proposed by the President, potentially advocating for it among our representatives in the Congress and highlighting the needs of our own community in this regard. Specifically the needs of Greenfield families and the children of Greenfield who may benefit from such programs in both the short and long term.

NAMI Basics Class Starts Saturday

NAMI-WM, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), will offer its "NAMI Basics" education course, for parents and caregivers of children and teens with emotional and behavioral difficulties, beginning Saturday, April 6th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Sunderland Public Library (20 School Street in Sunderland).

Save the Date! United Arc Spring Auction 2013

The United Arc will hold its Annual Spring Auction on Saturday, March 9, from 4 – 7 pm at Greenfield Community College.  All proceeds benefit services and programs for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

BBBS Welcomes Danielle Letourneau-Therrien

In January, Danielle Letourneau-Therrien became Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County.

Danielle has a background serving children and her community. For the last 12 years, she worked for the Northeast Foundation for Children / Responsive Classroom where she worked to bring products and services which support social-emotional learning and incorporate knowledge of child development to elementary school educators nationwide. In addition, she co-founded BeaconPlayground.org which raised funds for and supports the local playground at Beacon Field in Greenfield, MA. She has served on the boards of the Greenfield Business Association and of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County. In 2011, she ended four years of elected service on the Greenfield Town Council where she chaired the Community Relations and Education Committee.

HRC Begins Gun Violence Reduction Initiative

In response to the call of national and state leaders for community dialogue in the wake of the December 14, 2012, tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the Greenfield Human Rights Commission will initiate a Gun Violence Reduction Initiative beginning on Monday, January 14, 2013, at 6:00 PM in the Greenfield Town Hall second floor meeting room. It is anticipated that the Initiative will encompass at least the next several months.

More Volunteers Needed for Playspaces

Adapted from a Horizons for Homeless Children press release:

Horizons for Homeless Children (www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org) creates and installs Playspaces (kid-friendly spaces) inside of homeless shelters throughout Western, MA, including Greenfield. We then recruit, train, and place volunteers from the community inside these Playspaces to play and interact with the children living in the shelters.
