News from Your Local United Way

In addition to donations, our local chapter of the United Way is looking for volunteers to read to children and/or become Court Appointed Special Adovocates (CASA) for them.  A new session of the preschool reading program began earlier this month and there will be a CASA information session in town on Monday.

It's Blooming Backpacks!

Women's Way, a program of the United Way of Franklin County, is asking for your help in order to provide backpacks and school supplies to needy children in our area.  Every August, the Women's Way and community supporters gather together at a lovely garden in Historic Old Deerfield to socialize while supporting the needs of local students.  This year's main event will be held on Thursday, August 4th, from 5:30PM to 7PM, and admission is just $5, plus 1 or more backpacks filled with school supplies.

Roses for Mom, Help for Our Community

This Mother's Day, UPS is teaming up with the United Way for their annual Mother's Day Rose Sale!  As usual, your purchase of a dozen (or two!) roses for mom, a friend, yourself, or anyone who needs a smile will help support all of the great programs that the United Way of Franklin County has to offer.  In addition, thanks to UPS, each dozen roses you purchase will get you an entry in a drawing to win $100!

Show the Love for Kids

Every child deserves to be carefree but, this year, more than 5,000 kids in our area will experience abuse and neglect and they need your help. In honor of Valentine's Day, the United Way of Franklin County is teaming up with United Way of Hampshire County & United Way of Pioneer Valley and asking you to #Showtheloveforkids during the whole month of February.  By texting the word HEART to 20222, you will donate $10 to local United Way programs that support kids in our region (message & data rates may apply).

Don't Forget! Supper for Six Next Week

On Tuesday, February 9th, from 5:30PM to 7PM, in Stoneleigh-Burnham School's Capen Room, the United Way of Franklin County will be collecting grocery bags of food; each filled with enough non-perishable items to make dinner for a family of 6.  All the bags will be distributed to families in need in Franklin County during school vacation week, February 15th through 19th.  Last year over 300 bags, weighing in at nearly 5,000 pounds, were collected!

"Understanding the Gaza Crisis" Event Wednesday

A presentation and Q & A with Phyllis Bennis, author, activist, and fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), followed by an Arabic musical performance by Simon Shaheen, an internationally acclaimed virtuoso on the oud and violin will take place on Wednesday, August 13th, at 7pm, at the Odyssey Bookshop (9 College Street) in South Hadley.  Ticket sales and a portion of book sales will be donated to the Middle East Children’s Alliance, a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization.  Additional donations will also be welcome.

2nd Annual Mutton & Mead This Weekend

The Mutton & Mead Tavern is hosting its annual festival for your enjoyment! Come partake in merriment and play as our shire transports you to another time: Merchants hawking their wares, Games to test the skills of both children and adults, Stages showcasing the realm’s finest entertainers! Wander the streets listening to minstrels infusing the air with music. Meet Robin Hood and his Merry Men as well as Maid Marian! But watch out for the Sheriff!  Mutton and Mead is a fundraiser for the Montague Grange and the Foodbank of Western Mass.
