Dakin Issues Storm Plan & Advice

Adapted from a Dakin Humane Society press release:

Due to the large storm predicted January 26-27, Dakin Humane Society recommends that everyone with pets have an emergency plan, especially in case power is lost in the home.  In addition, though both locations will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dakin Humane Society can provide temporary care for animals affected by extended power outages at their 171 Union Street facility in Springfield after 3PM on Wednesday.

Big News From Dakin

The Pioneer Valley's Dakin Humane Society is excited to announce that an anonymous donor has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar every monetary donation to the organization between now and November 15th, up to a total of $100,000!  In addition, Dakin unveiled a completely revamped website last week and their $5 Feline Event over the weekend enabled them to place 137 animals in new homes.

The Pioneer Valley's Dakin Humane Society announced yesterday that it will be participating in the 2014 ASPCA “Mega Match-a-thon” adoption weekend by presenting a $5 Felines event on Saturday, October 18th, at both its Springfield and Leverett locations, from Noon until 6PM.

Dakin Dog Classes Start Soon

The Pioneer Valley's Dakin Humane Society will begin three, six-week, dog training workshops this month at their Leverett location.  The two regular classes being offered are "Basic Family Dog", on September 20th at 9:30AM, and "Better Family Dog", an intermediate level course on September 27th at 10:30AM.  There will also be a special "Rally Freestyle – Fun and Games" intermediate level class on September 27th at 11:30AM.

Primp Your Pit Bull Next Month

This August, Dakin Humane Society plans to spay/neuter 120 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs for Pioneer Valley residents at a special $20 rate, which includes a free doggie nail trim, during PetSmart Charities® annual “Primp Your Pit”  campaign.

Dakin Opens First Kitten Nursery in New England

The Dakin Humane Society has opened a kitten nursery at its Springfield location on Union Street, according to Executive Director Leslie Harris.  The nursery has been designed to provide intensive care to at-risk newborn kittens.

Act Now! Kitten Kaboodle Adoption Event at Dakin

Summer is the busiest time of the year at humane societies, due to the number of animals received and birthing season for kittens.  Dakin is overloaded with kittens right meow and more are arriving daily.  In an effort to promote kitten adoptions, and save lives, Kitten Kaboodle will offer specially reduced adoption fees for all kittens under six months old.  From Tuesday, July 30, through Sunday, August 4, 2013, kittens at Dakin adoption centers in Leverett and Springfield can go home for $125 (regularly $250) or $200 for a pair.

Dakin's Leverett Cats Want to Party Like Animals!

Dakin Receives $9,750 Grant

Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society has received a $9,750 grant from the Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) as part of the special "I'm Animal Friendly" license plate program.  These plates support spay/neuter efforts in Massachusetts and help to reduce the number of homeless animals in the state.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Pets

Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society recommends the following precautions to make Fourth of July fireworks and celebrations safe, calm, and cool for our four-legged friends.

*During the holiday celebrations, keep animals away from the fireworks and in a cool, quiet room.  The room should have secure doors and windows:  some dogs will jump through screens to get away from the noise.
