June Jobs Numbers Show Slight Increase in Unemployment

This just in from an Executive Office of Labor & Workforce Development press release:

The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development today reported that, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates for June were up in eighteen areas, down in the Fall River, Nantucket, and Tisbury areas, and unchanged in Barnstable. Over the year, the rates were up in twenty areas and down in two areas.

New England Natural Bakers Wins Grant

The Patrick Administration today announced $5.7 million in the Workforce Training Fund General Grant Program, providing for the training of over 5,600 current and newly hired employees at 72 Massachusetts companies across the Commonwealth. Two of these businesses are located in Franklin County, one right here in Greenfield.  New England Natural Bakers will recieve $81,395 and Nex Performance Films (dba New England Extrusions) of Turners Falls will get $71,750.  The grants, which are for up to two years, serve as a resource for businesses to increase the skill set of their incumbent employees and provide valuable training to the workers. As a result of these awarded grants, participating companies project to create 414 new jobs by the end of 2015.

The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development today reported that the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) preliminary estimates show that Massachusetts added 3,500 jobs in May and the total unemployment rate slightly increased to 6.6 percent.
