Winter Carnival 2014 is Here!

Woo hoo!  It's a beautiful day, lots of people are out and about, and the ice carving competition is underway.

Our intrepid staffer Jimmie spoke with some of the sculptors and you can watch his interviews on our homepage later today. 

Furniture Masterworks Lectures at Historic Deerfield

Historic Deerfield will present its annual free winter lecture series, "Furniture Masterworks: Four Centuries of Massachusetts Furniture", with lectures on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. in January, February, and March at Garonzik Auditorium in the Koch Science Center on the campus of Deerfield Academy.

Attention Young Filmmakers

The Northampton Arts Council will once again present YouthFilm, a day-long festival of film and video created by local youth and screened at the famous Academy of Music Theatre in downtown Northampton.  The festival accepts film and video entries from throughout the region by young people from 5–18 years old.

Due to the December 14th snowstorm, the 75-member Greenfield Harmony Community Chorus will now hold its annual holiday concert on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22ND, at 7PM.  It will still take place at Wesley Methodist Church (98 Maple Street) in Hadley, a beautiful new church with vaulted ceilings known for its extraordinary acoustics. Led by Mary Cay Brass, Greenfield Harmony is a multi-generational chorus that performs an eclectic mix of community-based music from many cultural and musical traditions.

Celebrate Heritage Holiday at Historic Deerfield

Historic Deerfield's month-long series of traditional festive activities is going strong, with even more jolly fun than last year, including horse-drawn wagon rides and giftmaking.  Also, courtesy of generous support from King Arthur Flour for Historic Deerfield's Open Hearth Cooking Program, every day in December will be "Baking Day" at Historic Deerfield.  Join hearth cooks, guides, and educators in this celebration while holiday décor and seasonal aromas set the mood for making spirits bright!  Heritage Holiday daily activities run through December 29th, except for December 24th & 25th when the village is closed, and are included with general admission to the museum.

2 Greenfield Women Finalists in Baking Contest

Congratulations to Karen Pleasant and Nancy Siano Steiner!  Historic Deerfield is pleased to announce that they are finalists in the Historic Deerfield King Arthur Flour Heritage Baking Recipe Contest.  A great number of submissions were received for the contest, which asked amateur bakers to send in their best family baked dessert recipe.  Prizes will be awarded on December 7th, in the categories of best story, most unique/creative, and best recipe.  Each winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to KingArthurFlour.com/The Baker's Catalogue and a copy of the Baker's Companion Cookbook.

A Season of Thanks

Historic Deerfield explores traditions of Thanksgivings past with "Season of Thanks", Saturday, November 29, and Sunday, November 30.  Visitors looking to take a break from their after-Thanksgiving holiday shopping can enjoy demonstrations from our hearth cooks preparing traditional Thanksgiving dishes, bark-basket-making with Narragansett descendant Jennifer Lee, and a lively re-enactment from the Society of the 17th Century.
