Reminder: Joyce Maynard to Read in Shelburne Falls 8/22

Bestselling novelist Joyce Maynard will be talking about her brand new book, "After Her", on Thursday night, August 22nd, at 6:30pm at the Arms Library in Shelburne Falls.  Boswell's Books is very proud to host Ms. Maynard once again.  She was here last year talking about her novel "Labor Day", which was adapted into a film starring Josh Brolin and Kate Winslett that was filmed in Shelburne Falls and other area towns. That film will be released on a limited basis at the end of this year and then in general release in January of 2014.

Pioneer Valley Ballet Offers Free Classes for Young Children

Pioneer Valley Ballet (PVB) is hosting its Fall Open House on August 24, 2013.  This free event will take place from 11am-1pm at their ballet studio in Easthampton, at the Eastworks Building, 116 Pleasant St., Suite 155.  Attendees will have opportunities to meet staff, tour the studio, register for school-year training programs, register to audition for The Nutcracker, and observe PVB’s advanced dancers in rehearsal.

Author Joyce Maynard Returns to Area for Reading

At 6:30PM on August 22nd, novelist Joyce Maynard will return to our area for a free reading at the Arms Library in Shelburne Falls.  She'll be sharing excerpts from her brand new book, "After Her", which she describes as part thriller and part love story.  It was inspired by the real-life Trailside Killings which took place in California very near to where she lives.

Be Safe on the Water This Weekend

Officials from the Department of Conservation and Recreation are urging the public to act safely this summer as the warm weather and open water brings bathers, boaters, and waders onto DCR's lakes, ponds, and ocean beaches. While air temperatures may feel like summer, water temperatures can still be very cold. DCR encourages parents and visitors to be vigilant, especially with children, when visiting designated swimming areas. Parents should be near their children when they are in the water. To further help prevent water-related tragedies, DCR is releasing the following facts and safety tips for anyone venturing near the water:

Learn About Silversmithing at Historic Deerfield

Silversmith Steve Smithers will be demonstrating and discussing the making of a (commissioned) set of sterling silver flatware for an early American 18th century home as part of Historic Deerfield's "Silvermithing Series," on August 10, October 6, October 26, and December 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m,. in the Parker and Russell Silversmith Shop on Old Main Street. Every aspect of the project will be covered, from the initial research and design phase, through all the steps in the making of a finished table setting for twelve. All pieces will be forged and hammered from silver stock, using tools and techniques similar to those employed in the making of a period set of flatware. Each place setting will include a dinner fork, spoon, and knife.

Pulling Taffy at Boswell's Books Tomorrow Night

At Boswell's Books on July 25th, at  6:30 PM, local author Tinky Weisblat will read and discuss her new book, "Pulling Taffy".  Ms. Weisblat's late mother Jan, affectionately known as Taffy, suffered from dementia.  “Pulling Taffy” pays tribute to the vibrant spirit of Jan by sharing journal entries her daughter wrote during the final year of Jan’s life.  It also includes history, family photographs, and recipes that document their time together.
