What's Happening at The Salasin Center?

The Salasin Center, which encompasses the Greenfield Women's Resource Center (GWRC) and the Family United Network (FUN), has a lot going on this month!  In addition to the ongoing Parents Supporting Parents group and Journey Dance class, a Summer Solstice Celebration/Women's Open Mic Night will be held on June 20th and a family dance party will happen on the 26th.

There's a lot going on at Greenfield's hospital!  A hard-working Greenfield Community College Student has received a scholarship from the Baystate Franklin Auxiliary, the public is invited to a free Health & Safety Fair on June 5th (***THE LOCATION FOR THIS HAS CHANGED, read more for details***), and BFMC will be doing cholesterol screening on the 11th.

BFMC to Hold Skin Cancer Screening May 16th

The Oncology Department at Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Joel Gordon, MD, dermatologist, will co-sponsor a free skin cancer screening on Friday, May 16th, from 2pm to 4:30pm, in the BFMC Oncology Department.  During the screening, Dr. Gordon will examine new growths that are less than one year old, as well as old growths that have changed in color, size, shape, and/or pain level or are causing irritation or bleeding.  The screening is not intended for individuals with skin rashes or for those who have seen a dermatologist in the past year.

World T'ai Chi Day 2014

This year, the local observance of World T'ai Chi Day will take place on Saturday, April 26th, from 10am to 11:30am, at the Franklin County Fair Grounds, during the “Little e” Home Show and Green Fair (no charge to enter).

Glaucoma Specialist to Speak at BFMC Senior Class Seminar

Senior Class at Baystate Franklin Medical Center will present "Glaucoma: the Silent Thief of Sight" on Thursday, April 3rd, from 6 – 7:30 pm, in the hospital’s main conference rooms. The guest speaker will be David Lotufo, MD, from Greenfield Eye and Lasik.  Dr. Lotufo’s discussion will focus on the various causes and treatments for glaucoma, the importance of early diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatments to control this silent “thief of sight”.

Baystate Health Blood Drive March 24th

The Baystate Health Blood Donor Mobile will host a blood drive on Monday, March 24th, from 11AM to 4PM, in the hospital’s Medical Office Building parking lot (48 Sanderson Street in Greenfield).  All blood types are needed.  Eligible blood donors will receive a Baystate Blood Donor travel mug.

Celebrate Valentine's Day at BFMC

In conjunction with BFMC's annual Chocolate Fantasy, featuring “chocolate everything”---a wide variety of chocolate items, raffles, silent auction, and Valentine-related local crafts, Clinical Notes (BFMC’s women's a cappella chorus) will present a free mini-concert of Love-ly Songs on Valentine’s Day.

New "Parents Supporting Parents" Group Starting

The Family United Network (FUN), part of The Salasin Center, is proud to announce the formation of a new, ongoing, support group for parents, beginning February 12, 2014.  Participants will meet on Wednesdays from 1pm to 2:30pm.  This group will be facilitated by Lynn Norwood & Melissa O’Malley, who have been providing The Nurturing Families 16 week program through The Salasin Project & The Recover Project.  Parents Supporting Parents is free to attend and offered to all parents & grandparents in the community.

Another Good Reason to Get a Mammogram

The Radiology/Imaging Department at Baystate Franklin Medical Center is offering free Reiki sessions to the first 10 women who call to schedule their first mammograms at BFMC before February 28, 2014.  The American Cancer Society recommends that women have a baseline mammogram at age 40, and follow up with yearly exams.  If you are a woman living in Franklin County, and you have never had a mammogram, you can sign up for your mammogram and be eligible for a free, one-hour, Reiki session.

The Salasin Center, which encompasses the Greenfield Women's Resource Center (GWRC) and the Family United Network (FUN), has altered its program schedule for 2014.  The biggest difference is that open hours for the GWRC have changed and extended so that they are now Mondays from 3pm to 5pm and Fridays from 12pm to 3pm.  In addition, the Wednesday GWRC Art group has moved to Mondays, from 1pm to 3pm, and Journey Dance on Tuesday evenings has a new start time, so that it now runs from 5pm to 6:30pm.
