Greenfield Recognizes National Health Center Week

From a Greenfield Mayor's Office press release:

Mayor William F. Martin announced the Town of Greenfield would join in the nationwide acknowledgement of National Health Center Week, August 11-18, 2013, celebrating the role of urban and rural healthcare centers across the nation. Local health centers reduce emergency room visits while at the same time providing community-based, accessible treatment for all, as well as essential preventative care that helps citizens lead healthier lives.

Pioneer Valley Ballet Offers Free Classes for Young Children

Pioneer Valley Ballet (PVB) is hosting its Fall Open House on August 24, 2013.  This free event will take place from 11am-1pm at their ballet studio in Easthampton, at the Eastworks Building, 116 Pleasant St., Suite 155.  Attendees will have opportunities to meet staff, tour the studio, register for school-year training programs, register to audition for The Nutcracker, and observe PVB’s advanced dancers in rehearsal.

Be Safe on the Water This Weekend

Officials from the Department of Conservation and Recreation are urging the public to act safely this summer as the warm weather and open water brings bathers, boaters, and waders onto DCR's lakes, ponds, and ocean beaches. While air temperatures may feel like summer, water temperatures can still be very cold. DCR encourages parents and visitors to be vigilant, especially with children, when visiting designated swimming areas. Parents should be near their children when they are in the water. To further help prevent water-related tragedies, DCR is releasing the following facts and safety tips for anyone venturing near the water:

Project Bread is awarding more than $160,000 to 425 summer meal locations in 37 communities, including Greenfield, to boost, strengthen, and expand the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a federally supported child nutrition program, which was specifically designed to bridge the summer gap in school meals.

Children suspected of having been abused will have new toys to play with while receiving services at the Northwestern Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC), thanks to the generosity of the employees at the Braintree office of New England Office Supply (NEOS), a minority- and woman-owned company.

BBBS Welcomes Danielle Letourneau-Therrien

In January, Danielle Letourneau-Therrien became Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County.

Danielle has a background serving children and her community. For the last 12 years, she worked for the Northeast Foundation for Children / Responsive Classroom where she worked to bring products and services which support social-emotional learning and incorporate knowledge of child development to elementary school educators nationwide. In addition, she co-founded BeaconPlayground.org which raised funds for and supports the local playground at Beacon Field in Greenfield, MA. She has served on the boards of the Greenfield Business Association and of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County. In 2011, she ended four years of elected service on the Greenfield Town Council where she chaired the Community Relations and Education Committee.

More Volunteers Needed for Playspaces

Horizons for Homeless Children (www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org) creates and installs Playspaces (kid-friendly spaces) inside of homeless shelters throughout Western, MA, including Greenfield. We then recruit, train, and place volunteers from the community inside these Playspaces to play and interact with the children living in the shelters.

13th Annual Holly Berry Craft Fair

On Saturday, November 10th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., more than twenty-five vendors will be at Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Buckland as part of a benefit for the Rowe School PTP.  The Rowe School PTP is very happy to be able to host this event since a fire destroyed the elementary school in early August. 

Free Irish Dance Lessons
