From September 15 to October 8, 2012, an exhibition of paintings by New England artist Robert Strong Woodward (1885-1957) will take place at the Memorial Hall Museum in Old Deerfield. At the age of 21, Woodward accidentally shot himself while cleaning a gun and was permanently paralyzed from the waist down. He settled in Buckland, MA, on his uncle's farm and turned to painting. In his lifetime, Woodward painted around 600 oils and 285 known chalks. Some were purchased by celebrities George Burns and Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, Oliver Wendall Holmes, Jr., poet Robert Frost, and actress Beulah Bondi. Through his landscapes, barn paintings and window pictures, Woodward documented a passing New England.
