Greenfield Human Rights Commission Meeting --- February 13, 2017

Last night, the commission adopted a resolution calling for the Greenfield Town Council to create a Safe Community Ordinance. Commissioners also discussed holding a public forum on vandalism, creating an action plan to end hunger in our city, and having a meeting in community housing to foster dialogue between the commission and residents.

Could Greenfield be a Sanctuary City?

On Monday, December 12th, at 6PM, during their regular meeting, the Greenfield Human Rights Commission will hold a public forum on what a Sanctuary or Safe Zone is, how one can be effective in reaffirming Greenfield's policy of diversity, and how it can be enforced.  The commission understands that many members of the public are interested in this and that two nearby cities have already created sanctuary for immigrants.  There is a special urgency for this in our town due to the fact that our largest agricultural businesses employ seasonal workers from all over.

Last night, the commission discussed the status of an investigation into recent hate email attacks, anti-bullying legislation, the town's poverty assessment, human rights awards, and planning for Summerfest 2017.

Learn More About Fair Housing in Greenfield

The Salasin Center has teamed up with the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center, a leader in providing public education on fair housing and fair lending issues, to provide the public with a free training session on Wednesday, October 5th, from 4PM to 5PM.  At this event, MA Fair Housing's Margaret Curran will go into depth about the discrimination her organization sees against families with children, due to lead paint.  She'll also briefly cover other discrimination issues and how to address them.
