Pop Up Park

Adapted from a joint press release:

The Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG), Greenfield's Sustainable Master Plan Committee, and the Greenfield Business Association (GBA) will be temporarily transforming a metered parking space on Main Street into a public park as part of an annual worldwide event on September 20th called “PARK(ing) Day".  These groups will convert the parking space into a public park for the day and promote local sustainable and alternative transportation activities that are occurring in Franklin County. Greenfield Mayor William Martin says about the event, “This is a great way to allow people stop and enjoy our downtown, while learning about the Greenfield Sustainable Master Plan effort and the Franklin County Bikeway.”

Originally invented in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used. Rebar’s Matthew Passmore says “PARK(ing) Day is about re-imagining the possibilities of the urban landscape.” Since 2005, the project has blossomed into a worldwide grassroots movement: PARK(ing) Day 2011 included 975 “PARK” installations in more than 160 cities, in 35 countries, on six continents. This year, the project continues to expand to urban centers across the globe with spaces promoting a wide range of civic-oriented goals.

Locally, the Park(ing) Day event in Greenfield will be used to promote the town’s work on its Sustainable Master Plan (and in particular the upcoming Fall Gathering, which is scheduled for Sept. 26 at Court Square from 4-7 pm) and to promote the Franklin County Bikeway with newly produced bikeway maps by the FRCOG.  In addition, this event will also simply be an entertaining activity for local residents and workers in the downtown.  On Friday the 20th, the FRCOG, the Town of Greenfield Master Planning Committee, and the GBA will be taking over a parking space located on Main Street, in front of the Brass Buckle restaurant at the corner of Chapman Street.  There will be fun activities, food, and refreshments available at the space from 8am to 5pm.  There will also be give-aways for people who visit the space while supplies last.

PARK(ing) Day is a user-generated invention created by independent groups around the globe who adapt the project to champion creative, social, or political causes that are relevant to their local conditions. More information regarding the Greenfield PARK(ing) Day can be found on the FRCOG webpage ( and the Greenfield Master Plan website (, and a global map of all participating cities are available on the PARK(ing) Day website, at
