Reminder: Marty McGuane to be Honored Monday

Adapted from a Greenfield Human Rights Commission (HRC) press release:

The Greenfield Human Rights Commission will formally bestow the first annual Greenfield Human Rights Award posthumously to Marty McGuane, and host a reception for the community and Mr. McGuane's family, on Monday, August 11, 2014, at 7PM, in the Greenfield Town Hall Meeting Room.  All are invited to this free event.

The Greenfield Human Rights Award recognizes the past public work of a Greenfield resident who best represented the promotion, protection, and expansion of human and civil rights in our community during the previous year.  Marty McGuane, who passed away in 2012, was nominated and cited for his body of work in the public sphere in helping to create the Human Rights Commission in Greenfield and for his outreach to discrete and insular communities in need of assistance in town.

Mr. McGuane, during his years as a member and officer of the Greenfield Town Council, was a proponent of the bylaw that created the commission.  Lewis Metaxas, the present chairman of the Greenfield Human Rights Commission, said that, "Fifteen years ago, it was not being taken for granted that the town should have a commission dedicated to this concept.  There was a considerable debate on the issue here, as there was in cities and towns all over the Commonwealth. In this town, Marty was a vocal proponent and sponsor that there should be a bylaw creating a Human Rights Commission. That advocacy was critical at the time."

Mr. McGuane was also cited for his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County, in promoting the adult mentoring of children; cooking for the Franklin County Community Meals program; and working to expand community access television.  In addition, he was acknowledged for his years of service in Greenfield town government.
