Give Blood, Save a Life

Adapted from a Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) press release:

The Baystate Health Blood Donor Mobile will host a blood drive on Tuesday, September 23rd, from 11AM to 4PM.  “The fall is an important time to get out and give blood, as we are completing the summer months – a crucial time for blood donation,” said Saundra Rose, blood donor recruiter for Baystate Health.  “The top reason people do not give blood is because they have never been asked, so we are asking you now to donate the gift of life this fall.  All of our blood donations are used within our local communities.  Donors can make a difference in the lives of their own families, friends and neighbors.”

All blood types are needed.  Blood donations take approximately one hour to complete including the interview, donation, and refreshments.  Please note that, due to construction behind the main hospital, the location of the bloodmobile will be 10 Beacon Street (the closed Holy Trinity School's parking lot).  Eligible blood donors will receive a ticket to the Big E or an Amazon gift card (while supplies last).

To donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old; weigh at least 110 pounds; have a valid photo ID; be in good health (no colds, sore throat; no antibiotics within 48 hours); and not have donated blood within the past eight weeks.  You may donate if you have had the flu vaccine or flu mist.  Ms. Rose reminds donors, “Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat well prior to your donation.  For those of you low in iron, include lots of leafy greens.”

Appointments and pre-registration are recommended, however, walk-ins are also welcome.  To make an appointment, contact the Blood Donor Center at (413) 794-4600 or email katrina.reinholz@baystatehealth.org.  Please indicate the approximate time you wish to donate, your birth date, your phone number, and whether or not this will be your first donation within Baystate Health.  If you have questions about your health history, medications, or your ability to donate, or would like to inquire about hosting a blood drive at your business or civic organization, please contact Reinholz.
