Holiday Happenings at Historic Deerfield

Adapted from a Historic Deerfield press release:

During Heritage Holiday Weekends this month, capture the festive spirit by joining hearth cooks, guides, and educators in a month-long series of traditional seasonal activities. Holiday décor and aromas are sure to set the mood and make your spirits bright!

Upcoming Programs and Events at Historic Deerfield
(Unless otherwise noted, all programs are included with general admission.)

Open Hearth Cooking Demonstration:  "Sugar & Spice"
Saturdays & Sundays through December 27th, from 10AM to 4PM, Visitor Center at Hall Tavern

Today it is easy to go to the store for chocolate, citrus, cinnamon, ginger, or sugar.  In the past, such ingredients were the expensive results of trans-oceanic trade and their use during holiday times signified a willingness to splurge in honor of the occasion.  The special holiday recipes that we pass down from generation to generation are often baked goods that we look forward to year after year.  Join our hearth cooks as they explore the sugar and spice that make the holidays nice.

Gift Making
Saturdays & Sundays through December 27th, from Noon to 4:30PM, Visitor Center at Hall Tavern Ballroom

Visitors may choose 1 of 3 projects in order to make progress on their lists by making a special gift by hand.

Tavern Games
December 19, 20, 26, 27, from 10AM to 4:30PM, Visitor Center at Hall Tavern
(Enjoy special group games and songs at 11AM & 2PM.)

Sit down and enjoy a game of checkers, fox and geese, or merelles, or try your hand at table top nine pins, Jacob's Ladder, and ball & cup.

Make Your Own Hot Chocolate Mix
December 19, 20, 26, 27, from 10AM to 4:30PM, Visitor Center at Hall Tavern

The Aztecs were the first to make hot chocolate by mixing cacao with water and flavoring it with chili, honey, and spices.  Later, Europeans adapted their recipe by adding sugar and milk.  Now, inspired by a colonial chocolate recipe, make your own hot chocolate mix to take home!
