Evening Winter Weather Update for December 29th

Adapted from a MassDOT press release:

MassDOT Highway is warning drivers of potentially hazardous road conditions as a flash freeze warning is in effect. With temperatures dropping and freezing rain conditions continuing across many regions of the state, MassDOT urges drivers to slow down and use caution.

“While this storm brought about the amount of precipitation we expected, we continue to urge drivers to drive carefully, to reduce speed, and to be mindful of the potential for ice on the roads,” said Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin. “While most folks are not unfamiliar with driving in snowy conditions, this is still the first storm of the season, and we want everyone to get home safely.”

As the MassDOT Highway Division remains involved in post-storm cleanup operations, and transportation officials continue to emphasize safe driving as the evening commute approaches, there will again be restrictions on tandems and propane trailer tractor units, as well as a speed reduction (40 MPH), along the Mass Pike from the New York border to Sturbridge (Interchange 9) through 9PM.

Drivers are also encouraged to prepare vehicles for winter driving, to have winter car supplies, and follow safe driving tips.  In addition, MassDOT reminds drivers to use common sense while driving near snow plows and remember that the road in front of the plow is usually much worse than the roadway behind it.  More winter safe driving tips can be found here.  Finally, MassDOT encourages travelers to join 77,500 other people and follow @MassDOT on Twitter for a variety of transportation updates.
