It's Party Time: Medicare turns 50

Adapted from a Western Mass Jobs with Justice press release:

To celebrate the anniversary of Medicare, which provides health insurance security to 55 million people, including 46 million people ages 65 and older and 9 million people younger than 65 who have permanent disabilities, having been signed into law on July 30, 1965, the Western Massachusetts Medicare Birthday Party Coalition will host a gathering on Greenfield's town common at 3:30PM on Thursday, July 30, 2015.

Local officials, health care experts, people on Medicare, and others will bring brief birthday wishes and proclamations.  The coalition will hand out fliers, postcards to send to elected officials, and sample "Health Security Cards".  Music will be provided by the Raging Grannies and the Super PACs band.

Medicare supporters will be stressing the importance of Protecting, Improving, and Expanding (PIE) this vital government program, emphasizing state and federal paths to do this:

*In Massachusetts, Bill H.1026/S.579, An Act establishing Medicare for All in Massachusetts, would provide truly universal, quality, affordable health insurance and would save billions of dollars for the state, municipalities, businesses, and households by eliminating the profiteering, waste, and inefficiencies in the present marketplace for insurance plans.

*H.R. 676, the Expanded & Improved Medicare for All Act, would do the same for the entire United States.

Come party with us!

The Western Massassachusetts Medicare Birthday Party Coalition is comprised of League of Women Voters of Amherst, Progressive Democrats of America, Western Mass. Jobs with Justice, Massachusetts Nurses Association, Represent.Us Western Mass., Mass-Care: The Massachusetts Campaign for Single Payer Health Care, Massachusetts Senior Action Council, and Stavros Center for Independent Living.
