Mayor Martin Responds to Email Attacks

This just in from the Greenfield Mayor's Office:

The recent spate of email attacks dispatched to various town departments related to Councilor Penny Ricketts is not only disconcerting but foreign to the community of Greenfield and will not go unchallenged. The Town of Greenfield will pursue, at any cost, individuals that attack our residents because of their race, religion, gender identity, and social and/or physical status. We will seek all legal means available to a municipality to bring criminal charges to a court for resolution. An internal investigation will continue and we will partner with other agencies for a thorough search for the parties responsible.

Once identified, it is hopeful a learning moment can be achieved for those involved. Most of us understand that this hateful, disgusting and juvenile behavior designed to hurt has no place in a respectful family of people and community and should not exist in any society. This blatant action of ridicule and demeaning speech is despicable and only reflects the perverted perceptions of the writer.

Elected officials can be verbally criticized, and often are, but in the absence of a constructive critical component of an issue, this is a criminal act on the surface and will be investigated as such.

We are saddened that one of our residents, an elected official, is the targeted recipient. Councilor Ricketts has demonstrated strength and grace during this moment and epitomizes the response required to neutralize this attack. We stand with Councilor Ricketts and will defend her rights and her person.
